Igor Makarov

Igor Makarov is an international businessman, philanthropist and former professional cyclist. He is currently president of ARETI International Group, a member of the UCI Management Committee, founder of the Swiss cycling team Katusha and founder and director of The Makarov Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of children throughout the world and helping people with autism and other intellectual and developmental disabilities live full and happy lives.

Makarov was born in 1962 and raised in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. He graduated from Turkmen State University in 1983 and competed as a world class cyclist from 1979 to 1986, during which time he was a member of the USSR National Cycling Team and winner of many national and international championships.

At the end of his athletic career in 1986, Makarov cultivated an interest in business. After building a small consumer goods manufacturing company, he helped to develop several lucrative companies, eventually founding ITERA, an international energy firm that, by the year 2000, was the third-largest private natural gas company in the world by output.

ITERA was sold in 2013, and in 2015, Makarov rebranded his existing companies as ARETI International Group, which is focused on investments worldwide.
