The new Continental GP5000 S TR is hookless-compatible and better in every way

The new GP5000 S TRs are tubeless-ready, hookless-compatible and supposedly 20% faster and 50g lighter but with 28% more sidewall protection

Continental has launched the new Grand Prix 5000 S TR, an updated, tubeless-ready and, at long last, hookless rim compatible version of the popular tyres.

You may have seen them secretly gliding over the cobbles at Paris-Roubaix and Paris-Roubaix Femmes at the weekend – or winning the time-trial World Championships with Filippo Ganna a couple of weeks ago – and now the tyre titan has officially broken the news.

They carry over much of the tech over from the previous GP5000 having been made with the same BlackChili compound, Vectran puncture protection and LazerGrip technology.

However Continental claims the GP5000 S TRs are 20% faster, 50g lighter – thanks to the use of a two-ply structure – and have 28% more sidewall protection than its predecessor.

The biggest change though comes as the German manufacturer – who is celebrating its 150th anniversary – has made the its top tier tyres hookless compatible and tubeless ready opening the door for use on a wider range of the best wheels on the market and making mounting much easier.

Oliver Anhuth, head of marketing for TwoWheel Tires at Continental, said, 'Following on from the success of the Grand Prix 5000 – which has arguably become on e of the most well-loved performances road tyres in the world – we are delighted to announce the launch of Grand Prix 5000 S TR.

'We created this new tyre to combine maximum performance with easy of use and reliability, regardless of whether a cyclist chooses to race, to spend long days out exploring the roads, to ride through summer or all year round. All new hookless compatibility and tubeless capabilities will put convenience without compromise at the heart of every ride.'

The new model is available with either black or transparent sidewalls and is priced at €79.90 (approx £68).

Continental GP5000 S TR: web editor Matthew Loveridge's first impression

Cyclist's web editor, Matthew Loveridge, has been lucky enough to get his hands on a pair before launch and has noted a few key things to keep an eye on.

Firstly the beads are huge and square, as you can see below.

Secondly, the tyres were 'an absolute sod' to fit on his hooked tubeless aluminium rims with a 19mm internal width, requiring the valve to be taken out and toe straps to hold the tyre in place.

That super tight fit meant that they did form a really good seal though and could be seated using a track pump and no sealant in the tyre.

He also says to make sure you stick to the recommended max tyre pressures, which can be found below.

Continental GP5000 S TR weight and sizes

The new tyres are available in two 650b sizes and four 700c sizes and Conti says the weight ranges from 250g to 320g.

Matthew's scales had his 700×28s weighing in at 269g each, a hair under what they're being marketed at.
