Versatility, performance and high value are the foundations of the Cube Cross Race Disc Pro

While some brands follow the high-profile (and often expensive) route of pro team sponsorship, Cube chooses to pass on maximum value to its customers with high-spec bikes developed at its CIC facility (Cube Innovation Centre). The Cross Race is a case in point. Few manufacturers are able to spec a complete Ultegra groupset and Mavic Aksium One Disc wheels on a bike that costs under £1,400. Carola Noordermeer, communications manager at Cube, explains that value was also integral to the choice of frame material. ‘We chose to work with aluminium as it is very reliable, which means we can be certain of quality. It is also very affordable, so it was the best choice for this bike.’

While aluminium might not make for the lightest frame, the Cross Race’s 6061 double-butted tubing is engineered to achieve the highest possible strength-to-weight ratio. ‘Our sophisticated mechanical forming process, tapered head tube and cold forged 3D dropouts make the frame exceptionally torsionally stiff,’ says Noordermeer.

However, the Cross Race isn’t designed only with race performance in mind. Pannier rack mounts and versatile geometry allow riders the scope to use the bike for gravel riding and even touring. ‘We tried to find the middle ground between race ready and everyday use for customers who want to try anything,’ says Noordermeer. So although the bike has everything required to compete on the race circuit, features like the 27.2mm seatpost and carbon fork offer concessions to comfort too.

With the Cross Race, Cube has placed the focus squarely on accessibility. For an affordable price you get a bike that can be raced hard, used as a long distance, robust tourer, or anything in between those two extremes.
