Science, experience and skill makes a Sturdy cycles bike

One glance at the Sturdy Cycles website is enough to see that Tom Sturdy makes bikes that stand out from the crowd. ‘I use my experience and unique mixture of expertise to interpret what is needed to best fulfil the needs of my customers, both structurally and biomechanically,’ says Sturdy. His ‘unique mixture’ of expertise is no boast either.

‘After working in bike shops I trained as an aerospace engineer and went on to gain an MSc in Sports Biomechanics, while competing at an elite level in triathlon.’ This varied background has given Tom an intimate understanding of the relationship between rider and bicycle, which he employs throughout a bike build.

‘Before my hands even touch the tools I ensure that the design is optimised for a customer’s biomechanics and ride preference. Function comes first with every aspect of the design, but I also make sure everything is well integrated aesthetically.’

Sturdy encourages his customers to get fully involved so they will forge an intimate relationship with their new bike. ‘I take great pride in the fact that every one of my frames is a high performance product. The nature of that performance, however, is directly related to the customers themselves. While some of my bikes are built to be raced, others are built to simply enjoy the view.’

Sturdy Cycles, from £1,200 (frame only).
