The time trial World Champion proved too good for the rest taking the opening Maglia Rosa in Turin

The 104th Giro d'Italia started in Turin with a frighteningly fast 8.6km time-trial along the River Po won by pre-stage favourite, Filippo Ganna.

For the second year a row, the Ineos Grenadier claimed the first Maglia Rosa of the race by virtue of the opening day's time-trial. This year, the Italian averaged an incredible 58.748kph to finish the course in a time of 8.47, a full 10 seconds faster than second place Edoardo Affini of Jumbo-Visma and 13 seconds ahead of Tobias Foss who finished third, also of Jumbo-Visma.

Of the General Classification hopefuls, it was Deceuninck-QuickStep duo Joao Almeida and Remco Evenepoel who fared best finishing fourth and seventh respectively, with times of 9.04 and 9.06. As for the rest, there was no real outlier with all of those harbouring true ambitions for the Maglia Rosa finishing between the 9.20 and 9.40 mark, negligble loses so early in a Grand Tour.
