Gallery: Dombrowski steals the win on a drenched Stage 4 at the Giro d'Italia

Rain ruled the day as the breakaway triumphed again while several GC contenders lose time on the final climb on Stage 4 of the Giro d'Italia

The puns were lined up and ready to go yesterday as Intermarché-Wanty Gobert went all in to attempt to get Rein Taaramäe into the pink leader's jersey on a rain-soaked Stage 4 at the Giro d'Italia.

Despite having been let go by the peloton, however, the Estonian's plans were derailed as Alessandro De Marchi pulled the second group on the road past him and Chris Juul-Jensen on the final climb of the day – Crown Juul puns also duly crossed off the list.

De Marchi, resplendent in his beautiful red wine-stained jersey, did enough to launch himself into the maglia rosa while sneaky Joe Dombrowski followed his wheel and pounced late to take his first every WorldTour stage win.

The route from Piacenza to Sestola had been teed up to be the first 'GC day' of the Giro with plenty of tough climbing right up to the final run-in and when Bahrain Victorious launched Mikel Landa off the front on the final climb up the Colle Passerino it was on.

Landa was joined by Egan Bernal, Hugh Carthy, Aleksandr Vlasov and Giulio Ciccone with all the other big boys showing early signs of weakness.

De Marchi and Dombrowski should have an easy day on Stage 5 to reminisce about their heroics in the rain, but all we need to do is get stuck into Chris Auld's images from the stage here:
