A crash-filled finale sees Mikel Landa sadly forced to withdraw as Caleb Ewan pips Giacomo Nizzolo to take Stage 5 of the Giro d'Italia

It was a day to forget for two of cycling's best nearly men as Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious) crashed out of the race and Giacomo Nizzolo was cruelly denied his first ever Giro d'Italia stage win on the line at the end of Stage 5.

Landa, who looked to be in great form attacking the other favourites on the final climb of Stage 4, came down in a collision with a signalling marshal and had to be taken to hospital. Let's hope it's not too serious.

The stage from Modena to Cattolica was always going to be one for a furious finish, pretty much pan flat with a technical last few kilometres.

In the finale there were two leadouts for no one by Bora-Hansgrohe's Daniel Oss and Alpecin-Fenix's Alexander Krieger before Giacomo Nizzolo emerged at the front of the pack in front of Elia Viviani and Peter Sagan.

Despite twice winning the points jersey at the Giro – and once coming second in the competition – Qhubeka-Assos's Nizzolo had never won a stage and it all seemed set for the duck to be broken.

Alas, round came little Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Soudal), emerging seemingly out of nowhere to take the win, with the reaching hands on Nizzolo's jersey reflecting the tragedy to a tee.
