The breakaway make it stick as young Lafay proves strongest on Stage 8

The Giro d'Italia saw yet another breakaway success with young French climber Victor Lafay taking the win on Stage 8 to Guardia Sanframondi.

The 25-year-old Cofidis rider proved the strongest from the day's nine-man break, ridinng the final 2.2km of the stage solo ahead of Francesco Gavazzi (Eolo-Kometa) and Nikias Arndt (Team DSM).

Almost five minutes later, the main peloton of General Classification hopefuls crossed the line including Maglia Rosa wearer Attila Valter (Groupama-FDJ). The only GC riders to lose time were Jai Hindley (Team DSM) and Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious) who lost 11 seconds and 30 seconds respectively.

In other news, Lotto-Soudal sprinter Caleb Ewan abandoned mid-stage.
