The Giro d'Italia 2021 is proving a race of firsts, as Belgium's Campenaerts proved yesterday with his debut Grand Tour stage win

The 2021 Giro d'Italia has proved particularly fruitful for riders who had never won a Grand Tour stage before. With Victor Campenaerts taking a popular victory on Stage 15 into Gorizia, he became the 11th rider of this year's race to break their Grand Tour duck.

So far only Caleb Ewan, Peter Sagan and Filippo Ganna are former winners at three-week races. It's quite a phenomenal number if you consider the riders that are on the startlist but testament to Campenaerts, Tim Merlier, Taco van der Hoorn, Joe Dombrowski, Victor Lafay, Andrea Vendrame, Gino Mäder, Mauro Schmid, Giacomo Nizzolo, Lorenzo Fortunato and Egan Bernal.

With Campenaerts' victory, it was also three victories in five days for Qhubeka-Assos who have been the surprise package of this year's Giro so far. After a winter of uncertainty around the team's future and a last minute scramble to form a roster of riders, it's good to see 'Africa's team' doing so well.

And, for our last stat, this was the eighth stage of this year's Giro so far in which the breakaway has taken victory, too. Proof that fortune really does favour the break.
