Cadex launches AR 35 all-road and gravel wheelset plus tyres: Details, key specs and pricing

Cadex releases super-light, wide hookless carbon wheels along with matching 40mm tyres

Cadex has announced a new AR/Gravel wheelset and matching tyres. Owned by the appropriately large Giant Bicycle corporation, the relaunched Cadex brand has quickly re-established itself thanks to a host of very light and forward-thinking road designs such as the Cadex 42 Disc wheels.

The Cadex range uses wide carbon rims with a hookless design to secure their tyres. This purportedly leaves them extremely strong while also being demonstrably lightweight. Inevitably enough, Cadex’s previously bijou range has now expanded to also service the growing gravel bike segment.

The essential item in this new range is the Cadex AR 35 wheelset. Weighing just 1,270g for the pair despite possessing an enormous 25mm inner width, they too make use of hookless carbon rims. This extremely low weight is in part thanks to their move away from using a heavier, more complicated crotchet-type rim to hold the tyre in place.

This increasingly popular style of rim design works with a range of approved tubeless tyres which are guaranteed to match the specifications necessary.

Allowing Cadex to achieve what it claims is a best-in-class stiffness-to-weight ratio, its hookless rims should also be far more robust than traditional designs. In fact, the brand claims these gravel and all-road options are as strong as you’ll find on an XC mountain bike, while being lighter than those found on most high-end road racing bikes.

Cadex says it achieves this via a layup process that places carbon fibre only where it’s needed. Similar to the method employed when making a frame, this sees the quantity and orientation of the material vary depending on the desired result.

Cadex AR 35 wheels: All new everything

Cadex says that the rims’ carbon layup helps create what the brand describes as category-leading lateral stiffness.

Throw in some ultra-light carbon spokes, plus hubs designed to support the brand’s custom-tuned Dynamic Balanced Lacing technology (which Cadex says creates a wider bracing angle and more even tension under pedalling) and the results should be some seriously unrelenting wheels. Either way, Cadex believes it’s got the lab data to prove performance to that effect.

Obviously, all this stiffness would be somewhat wasted if it weren’t backed by hubs with a fast pickup. To ensure the entire ensemble snaps into action as quickly as possible, Cadex has created a new R2-C60 hub.

Employing the brand’s exclusive R-Drive 60-tooth ratchet freehub, this aims to provide near-instant engagement along with improved durability courtesy of its unique flat spring design. Versions to fit Shimano, Campagnolo, and SRAM XDR cassettes will all be available at the moment of purchase and at the same cost.

Despite being aimed at gravel, there’s no reason the wheels couldn’t also function on a rugged, but still ultra-light, road bike. With a broad inner width, they’re designed to support higher volume 28-45mm road and gravel tyres.

Allowing for a better tyre profile, along with an improved contact patch and safer operation at lower pressures, they’ll suit a surprisingly extensive range of applications, a fact hinted at by Cadex’s marketing of them as an ideal all-road choice.

Cadex AR and GR tubeless tyres

Of course, with your fancy new wheels, you’ll be wanting some equally fancy new tyres. Helping simplify their selection, Cadex is also launching two new 40mm gravel tyres to sit alongside its road-going models.

Guaranteed to be compatible with the hookless standard used on it and other makers’ wheels, they aim at speed and control over terrain ranging from tarmac to loose gravel.

Known as the AR and GX, both these tubeless tyres feature a 170tpi casing, Kevlar/carbon composite beads, and all-over puncture protection.

The AR is the faster rolling of the two, sporting a diamond-style centre tread suited to better graded surfaces, where speed is of the essence.

By comparison, the more capable GX employs a pronounced central tread and chunkier side knobs for better control in loose gravel and sand, while also being competent in muddy conditions.
