Robyn’s Extremely Online Round-up #21: Death. Taxes. Pre-Tour busts and cuts

The 21st instalment in our new series recaps the weekly shenanigans in the peloton, showcasing the fun side of cycling

Are we all fresh and recovered from the Giro Donne rest day on Sunday followed by the Tour de France rest day on Monday?

Of course not. I’m always tired.

As are, I expect, the boys who spent the Grand Départ on the ground in Copenhagen.

Will and Matthew produced an abundance of galleries (and there are more to come). From Adam Yates’s new Pinarello Bolide F TT to Mads Pedersen’s Trek Speed Concept TT and his new 2023 Trek Madone SLR complete with snazzy gold chain.

How many bikes do people need?!

(Cue a stream of people telling me the difference between road bikes and TT bikes.)

But cast your minds back to before the Tour de France if possible, as we venture into my latest Extremely Online Round-up...

Pre-Tour chop

Death. Taxes. A pre-Tour bust. A pre-Tour haircut.

Tradition is interwoven in cycling, and it’s always good to see the concept of a fresh trim continues every year.

Geraint Thomas usually documents the process undertaken by his wife, Sara, and 2022 has been no different.

Even Tour de France debutant Tom Pidcock joined in the fun.

Just don't sneeze with the clippers...

Imposter among us

When I was younger, we had a set of twins in the same school year. One time they swapped classes just to see if the teachers would notice.

While the thought still occurs with twins in cycling (is that Simon Yates in an Ineos kit instead?), I never believed the same could be said for older siblings.

David van der Poel’s picture was displayed in the official Tour de France magazine. The issue?

They were talking about his brother Mathieu van der Poel instead.

At least they got Stefan Küng right...

Never mind.

Shit on it

Paul Ritter gave us a plethora of brilliantly acted roles in his career. None more lovable than the dad from Friday Night Dinner.

Mieke Docx’s helmet did indeed have shit on it. They say it’s good luck, but is it worth it?

Up All Night...

... Is a song by One Direction.

But what do Tour de France and Harry Styles fans have in common aside from an appreciation of men dressed in colourful clothing?

They will wake up at ungodly hours to wait for their faves. And I love it.

Blink if you need help

When we say look how happy he is… we’re talking about Johan on the left… yes?

Shimano stan

I was a huge fan of the 2013 Argos-Shimano teams.

Reflecting on it, the men's side had a roster that included Warren Barguil, John Degenkolb, Tom Dumoulin, Tobias Ludvigsson and Tom Veelers. Stacked.

Also on the squad were Germany’s Marcel Kittel and Simon Geschke, who remain friends to this day.

Because as we all know, the best of friends publicly roast each other lovingly on social media <3.

Sibiu Tour appreciation

I appreciate a good meme.

The latest is from the boys at Team Corratec, who happened to be presenting their lineup during the chaos of the Tour de France.

[Editor’s note: according to Wikipedia, ‘the Sibiu Cycling Tour is a 2.1 category professional bicycle road race held in Sibiu, Romania.’ Yeah, me neither.]

Special shoutout: Thomas De Gendt

Yesterday, it was revealed by Lotto Soudal that Cyclist favourite Thomas De Gendt had extended his contract with the team for two more years.

That’s two more seasons of the Breakaway King turned Breakaway Killer.

Everyone liked that.

See you next week!
