Mount Baldy returns, and there’s a return to Laguna Seca Raceway too

The host cities for the 2019 Tour of California have been announced, with a summit finish on the brutal Mount Baldy the headline inclusion on both the men’s and women’s routes.

Now in its 14th year (and the 4th edition of the women’s race), the men’s race will start on 12th May in Sacramento, concluding on 18th May in Pasadena.

The women’s Tour of California will run for three days from 16th to 18th May.

Both races will feature Mount Baldy on the penultimate day. The climb has regularly featured in the men’s race after its debut in 2011, while it's a first-time feature in the women’s race.

Levi Leipheimer, Robert Gesink, Julian Alaphilippe and Andrew Talansky have all notched stage victories on the 7% average slopes of the 20km climb.

Ventura County, one of the areas hardest-hit by the devastating wildfires in late 2017, hosts a stage finish and a whole stage of the women's race.

Understandably, the race doesn’t visit north-west California, which has been hit hard by a number of wildfires this year.

The WeatherTech Raceway, more commonly known as Laguna Seca, will host the start of stage four, while stage two to South Lake Tahoe should provide an opportunity for the GC riders to begin the battle for the race victory.

No time trials have been confirmed, but with stage one of the men’s race starting and ending in Sacramento, a prologue or longer time trial could be possible.
