Lotto-Soudal rider, who was the last winner on Ventoux at this year's Tour, helps with memorial before 50th anniversary of Simpson's death

Lotto-Soudal rider Thomas de Gendt, who was the last rider to win on Mont Ventoux when he triumphed in the shortened stage in 2016, has also played a part in remembering Tom Simpson, who died on the mountain 50 years ago next year.

To commemorate the anniversary a new memorial is being built at the point Simpson collapsed, 1km before the summit, and De Gendt paid his respects by helping out and lending some graft in the laying of its steps, appearing on a short film made by Sporza.

Tom Simpson's daughter, Joanne, was also involved in its construction, and in a voiceover on the video refers to the memorial as "My stairway to heaven."
