Giro d'Italia wildcard teams announced

Cyclist magazine
18 Jan 2017

The four teams that will race alongside those from the WorldTour at the Giro d'Italia have been announced

The wildcard teams that will race the 2017 Giro d'Italia have been announced. Bardiani CSF, Gasprom-Rusvelo, Wilier-Selle Italia and CCC Sprandi Polkowice have been chosen to race alongside the 18 WorldTour teams at the Italian Grand Tour.

With confirmation of the teams that will be taking the start comes the news that just two Italian-registered squads - Bardiani CSF and Wilier-Selle Italia - are on the start list.

Despite this, home fans will have plenty to cheer as Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) is set to race. The parcours even goes through the two-time winner and current champion's hometown of Messina.

The 2017 Giro d'Italia starts on Friday 5th May, kicking off in Alghero, Sardinia. The race bucks the trend of a final day processional sprint stage with a 28km individual time trial into Milan.

The preceding stages may have already decided the winner, but a final day TT could bring one final upset.
