Pro, a subsidiary of Shimano and Team Sky's wheel supplier, says it is looking into the incident

Pro, the official wheel supplier of Team Sky, and the as such the manufacturer of the wheel that infamously 'exploded' during the team time trial on the opening stage of Tirreno-Adriatico, has issued a statement on the incident.

The wheel in question was a tri-spoke carbon tubular wheel, being ridden by Team Sky rider Gianni Moscon, which suffered some sort of malfunction that caused the wheel to disintegrate, sending Moscon to the ground and leaving him with a lot of road rash.

The incident, along with a couple of other mechanicals during the team time trial, contributed to Team Sky losing minutes to time trial winners BMC, who incidentally were also using the same Pro tri-spoke wheels. But exactly what caused the problem remains unclear.

'Pro is continuing its investigation into the issue we saw with Team Sky at the team time trial of Tirreno-Adriatico,' said Pro on Thursday, a day after the incident. 'We are continuing to look closely into all factors that could cause the incident.

'During production the three-spoke wheel passed Pro's extremely high internal quality control and ISO/UCI standards. Pro's three-spoke wheel was introduced in 2014 and has a flawless record, achieving countless time trial victories since, including BMC's team time trial win in the same stage.

'In the meantime we wish Gianni Moscon the best of luck in the remaining stages of Tirreno-Adriatico.'
