Getting KOMs the hard way

It’s annoying when your friends post every Sunday afternoon pootle to social media in search of kudos for their cycling efforts. However, few riders would begrudge Greg Van Avermaet hyping his Sunday ride.

With 16 top 10 segments and a KOM up the Kemmelberg, the Belgian Classics specialist will no doubt be celebrating his Strava achievement awards along with his victory at Gent-Wevelgem.

Now surely the favourite for next Sunday’s Tour of Flanders, Van Avermaet covered the race’s 249.7 kilometres at an average speed of 43.8 kilometre per hour.

Having launched the winning attack on the final ascent of the Kemmelberg he now sits tied with Arnaud Démare for the fastest ascent of the famous cobbled climb.

Van Avermaet’s win was the third of his Classics campaign, coming after victories at E3 Harelbeke and Omloop Het Nieuwsblad.

Having gone clear of the pack, few riders were prepared to help Peter Sagan chase him down, leaving him only to outfox Jens Keukeleire for the win.

While Van Avermaet’s winning streak has left him as favourite for the Tour of Flanders it might yet prove a disadvantage. Also in strong form Sagan has found himself few partners in recent races, and come Sunday few are likely to be willing to tow Van Avermaet either.
