Astana say that the Italian is still expected to ride Tour of the Alps and Giro d'Italia

Fabio Aru has suffered a training crash that has caused what appears to be substantial swelling around his left knee.

The crash happened while Aru was on a training camp in the Sierra Nevada in southern Spain, and was apparently caused by a blowout in his front tyre.

'This just not good,' Aru said in a tweet with a photo of his knee. 'Now let's focus on getting to 100%! I will keep you updated in the coming days.'

In a statement on his Astana team's website, the rider is said to have suffered a bit of road rash, as well as 'blunt trauma to his left knee, with involvement of the patella.'

An MRI scan has confirmed that there is no fracture, however.

Astana say that Aru, who is due to lead the team at the Giro d'Italia next month, is expected to make a recovery for the Tour of the Alps (formerly Giro del Trentino), which starts on April 17th, and will be a crucial part of his build up to the Italian Grand Tour - his big objective for the season.
