Dimension Data rider was due to lead team at Liege-Bastogne-Liege, but his race schedule will now have to be changed

Dimension Data Steve Cummings has sufferd a fractured collarbone, scapula and sternum in a crash on stage four of the Tour of the Basque Country on Thursday.

The rider came down with several others and immediately abandoned the Spanish World Tour race, of which he won a stage last year.

Cummings was taken to hospital, where x-rays confirmed the fractures.

'The scapular fracture extends into the joint meaning that Steve will likely need surgery to ensure an accurate reduction,' said Dr Jarrad Van Zuydam, the team's doctor. 'He will stay in hospital overnight to allow adequate pain management but we hope to transfer him by tomorrow and schedule the surgery in the next two days.'

However, Cummings has been ruled out of Liege-Bastogne-Liege, the Ardennes Monument that he was due to lead the team at later this month.

'He will now have to change his race schedule and re-focus on other goals,' said a statement on the team's website.

'If all goes well, we can expect to have him on a trainer in two weeks’ time with a gradual return as pain allows,' added Van Zuydam.
