Event becomes the only alpine Gran Fondo in the UCI World Series

The Marmotte Hochkönig, part of the Marmotte series recently taken over by Look, has been announced as the 20th qualification event of the UCI Gran Fondo World Series.

As such, the top 25% of riders from each age category will qualify for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships, due to be held in Albi in France at the end of August.

The Marmotte Granfondo series, which has been running since 1982, is organised by Golazo, a Belgium-based sports event company, and consists of three events: The Marmotte Alps, Marmotte Pyrenees and Marmotte Hochkonig in Austria, with the latter being the most recent addition.

Starting and finishing in the Austrian town of Mühlbach am Hochkönig, the Marmotte Hochkönig will take the riders over 5 climbs in the region, over a total distance of 167km and 3,462m elevation.

Towards the start of the parcours is the 1,370m Dientner Sattel and 1,290m Filzensattel, before a period of relative flat until the 986m Griessenpass ramps up at 82km. The finale of the event is defined by another ascent of the Dientner Sattel - this time from the other direction - followed by the final 1,502m climb up to the finish at Mühlbach am Hochkönig.
