One of Vincenzo Nibali's key domestiques, Javier Moreno, has been disqualified from the Giro d'Italia after an incident between the Bahrain-Merida rider and Team Sky's Diego Rosa.

The incident happend during stage four of the Giro, which finished on top of Mount Etna and was won by UAE Fly Emirates' Jan Polanc.

Video footage shows Moreno tugging on Rosa's jersey, before pushing him to one side.

'My teammates and me were all in the line coming to the final climb,' explained Moreno. 'Team Sky came up on the left and Rosa wanted to get onto my teammates wheel in front of me. When he realized I was resisting, he aggravated me to which I reacted by pushing him, unfortunately causing him to crash.'

Rosa himself said that the two riders came together at a stressful moment of the race, and that after the incident he required a bike change.

Moreno was fined 200 Swiss Francs and kicked off the race for his part in the tussle, but was quick to make a statement of apology after his disqualification.

'I want to apologize for my reaction and make it clear that it was not my intention for him to crash,' he said. 'I apologize to him and Team Sky, as well as to my teammates and sponsors.'
