Headline riders announced for inaugural Hammer Series event

Philippe Gilbert, Fernando Gaviria, Andre Greipel and Tom Dumoulin to compete at Hammer Sportzone Limburg in June

The inaugural Hammer Series event, Hammer Sportzone Limburg, is due to commence on 2nd June, and in advance of the three-day event some top competing riders have been named.

Classics star Philippe Gilbert (Quickstep Floors) will be joined by recent Giro Maglia Rosa and sprinter Andre Greipel (Lotto-Soudal), overall Giro contender Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb) and Sep Vanmarcke (Cannondale-Drapac).

The series, founded by Velon and Infront Media, aims to take a new approach to road racing, condensing a varying mix of team-orientated events into a three-day format.

The 16 competing teams can select a squad of seven, with five of those riders taking part each day. With a race to suit the climbers, a race to suit the sprinters, and a race to suit a good team time trial performance, the Hammer Series aims to make the daily team composition key, and challenge the all-round strength of each squad.

Quickstep Floors will be arriving with both Philippe Gilbert and Fernando Gaviria, who has also pulled on the pink Giro leader's jersey in recent days. 'We showed amazing team work to win the Maglia Rosa on Sunday, and we'll need to do the same at Hammer Series to have a chance of winning,' the Colombian said.

A full start list will be announced closer to the event start on June 2nd. For more information on the event and the races within it, read our introduction to the Hammer Series here.
