The stationary moto was clipped by a rider and caused many riders to fall

Geraint Thomas's attempt at winning the 2017 Giro d'Italia could be over after he went down hard in a crash which looks to have been caused by a police motorcycle.

The motorcycle was stopped at the side of a narrow road at a point when riders were using the full width, just as the climb of Blockhaus started to kick up.

A Sunweb rider was unable to avoid the poorly placed motorcycle, clipped the edge of the moto and was sent into the riders around him.

A number of competitors went down, including most Team Sky riders. Importantly, both Thomas and Mikel Landa hit the ground and were quickly way down on the front of the pack.

Fellow British rider Adam Yates (Orica-Scott) was also caught up in the incident and was forced to push hard to try and get back on terms with the rapidly disappearing front of the group.

On screen graphics showed his heart rate through the roof as he worked to limit his losses.

With 10km left to the summit finish Thomas was almost three minutes down and bleeding from cuts on both arms.

The Welshman was surrounded by teammates who turned themselves inside out to get their co-leaders back in contention.

Yates came in 4-37 down on stage winner Nairo Quintana (Movistar) while Thomas was a further 30 seconds back.
