L'Etape London to include timed sprint sectors, with the winners receiving a place at L'Etape du Tour

L'Etape London by Le Tour de France is set to spice things up in its format this year with the introduction of new closed-road sprint sections - the winners of which will earn themselves a place at L'Etape du Tour.

Two intermediate sprints will be added to both the 186km and 147km routes, and will feature a 200m timed full-gas effort during the middle portion, followed by a timed 1km effort at the finale at Lee Valley Velopark.

The latter has been tackled by no less than Chris Froome in the past, who complete the circuit in 1 minute 15 seconds. The respective winners of last year's L'Etape London timed sector, which was also held on the circuit, did it in 1 minute 22 and 1 minute 32 respectively.

There are three distances available to participate in at this year's L'Etape London, which starts and finishes at Lee Valley VeloPark in East London before heading out into Essex: 186km, 147km and 79km.

Route for L'Etape London long route.

Times from the sprint sections will be aggregated, and the winners who participated in the long distance ride will earn themselves a place at L'Etape du Tour, including three nights' accommodation, bike hire and a place in the first wave of the day.

The fastest from both the medium and short distances will receive an official Tour de France Green Jersey.
