Are Cannondale to stop sponsoring eponymous pro team at the end of the season?

Jonathan Vaughters could need to find fresh cash if long standing team is to continue

Team manager Jonathan Vaughters looks to be in need of a new title sponsor for his long standing squad, which is presently racing as Cannondale-Drapac. The move comes amid reports that American bicycle maker Cannondale's contract with the team will not be renewed when it lapses at the end of the 2017 season.

The lead sponsor is thought to be in discussions with other teams, and so will not be cutting its sponsorship (as previously reported) but instead could be shifting its budget elsewhere.

The popular Cannondale–Drapac team, which is home to Simon Clarke, Joe Dombrowski, Davide Formolo, Taylor Phinney, Pierre Rolland, Andrew Talansky, Rigoberto Urán and Sep Vanmarcke has existed in various forms since gaining UCI Continental status in 2005.

Set up by American ex-pro Jonathan Vaughters to promote clean and credible cycling the team is managed by British former professional Charly Wegelius.

Over the years the team has been home to both David Millar and Bradley Wiggins. Variously known as Team Slipstream and Team Garmin, although the squad has switched sponsors numerous times over the years while maintaining a core staff and roster of riders, the news that they may lose their title sponsor comes late in the season.

With the riders now preparing for the Tour de France, the added headache of searching for a benefactor to secure the future of the team is a stress they could do without.

Ranked 8th in the UCI WorldTour Team standings last year, and with billionaire entrepreneur and owner of Aston Villa Doug Ellis as a longstanding supporter, hopefully it’s not yet curtains for the team.
