With Team Sky’s squad for the Tour de France yet to be confirmed Michał Kwiatkowski, Christian Knees and Peter Kennaugh have been seen out riding the route with team leader and defending champion Chris Froome.

They were spotted scoping out several upcoming climbs last week, and must now be thought likely to form part of Froome’s eight man support squad. The four were photographed riding the Col de Vars, the first of the two climbs that constitute Stage 18 of this year’s race.

Running from Briançon to the top of the Col d'Izoard the stage is the final mountainous day of this year's Tour, and likely to prove decisive.

Froome was was also spotted riding the Galibier climb that forms the conclusion of Stage 17.

Without the pressure of competing in the races leading up to the Tour de France the big contenders are free to spend the weeks before the event reconnoitering the route.

Also seen out in the Alps taking in some of the key stages was Movistar’s Nairo Quintana. He rode up the Galibier the day before Froome also passed through.

With the pics of the Movistar rider coming directly from the team, they give no indication of the composition of the team likely to assist the Colombian rider as he takes on defending champion Froome.
