Riders using Strava at the 2017 Tour de France

Strava was initially designed as a way to motivate riders who otherwise couldn’t get together to train and compete. This isn’t exactly a problem for the 198 professional riders who are now riding the 2017 Tour de France.

However, with ever more of them using Strava, the social network has become an excellent way to keep tabs on your favourite star riders.

While it might be a bit harsh for local French or German cyclists who see their KOMs tumble to pros hitching a lift in a charging peloton, for everyone else it’s a great way to see how their efforts match up against the top riders.

Exactly how much insight there is to be gained on adding your favourite pros to your Strava feed depends on how much they feel like sharing.

While most are happy to show off as to how fast they are at climbing or descending, many are more cagey about sharing their power output or even heart rate.
