Watch: A breakaway win and nearly a GC upset on Stage 15 of the Tour de France (video highlights)

Bauke Mollema went away on his own to win the stage, but things were kicking off back down the road

Stage 15 of the 2017 Tour de France was possibly the most exciting day so far, and could have been even more decisive had race leader Chris Froome (Team Sky) not got back in touch after missing a split and then getting a puncture.

As it was, the top five on the General Classification was unchanged but the energy the race leader had to expend may take its toll later in the race.

Romain Badet used his whole AG2R La Mondiale team to split the race but could not turn that into a time advantage by the end of the stage.

The stage win went to Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo) after he went clear of his breakaway companions.

Most riders will now be very pleased to have got to the second rest day, particularly those in contention for the overall as there is only 2:02 between the yellow jersey and Adam Yates (Orica-Scott) in seventh.

Froome's rivals will need to isolate him in the final mountains later this week if they are to not only overhaul his lead but get far enough ahead to have some breathing space in the Stage 20 time trial.

We should be in for an exciting week.
