Watch: Team Sunweb's plan goes perfectly on Stage 16 of the Tour de France (video highlights)
Michael Matthews took maximum points in his quest for the Green Jersey on a near-perfect day for Team Sunweb
On most days at the Tour de France teams will have a plan and do what they can to make it happen. With 22 competing teams, with sometimes wildly varying ambitions, most squads never see their intentions come to fruition.
This wasn't the case for Team Sunweb on Stage 16 of the 2017 Tour de France, however, when by the looks of things their plan came off pretty much perfectly.
Michael Matthews drove the pace early on and put his chief rival for the Green Jersey, its current wearer Marcel Kittel (Quick-Step Floors), out the back early.
The Australian then took maximum points at the intemediate sprint before also crossing the finish line first to win the stage.
This is his second of the Tour compared to Kittel's five, but momentum is with Matthews. Excitingly for fans, the Green Jersey competition could come down to the final finish line on the Champs Elysees on Sunday.
Before then there are plenty of mountains for the sprinters to get over, so there's even a question mark over which will even be present on the final stage.
