Annemiek van Vleuten's lead from Stage 1 never looked threatened

Annemiek van Vleuten (Orica-Scott) won Stage 2, and with it the overall, at the 2017 La Course by Le Tour de France. The Dutchwoman was set off with a 0:43 headstart on Lizzie Deignan (Boels-Dolmans) after the former's victory atop the Col d'Izoard on Stage 1.

Deignan made the tactical choice to await Elisa Longo Borghini (Wiggle-High5) and Megan Guarnier (Boels-Dolmans) rather than push on solo, and the three attempted to work together to bring van Vleuten back.

Once the trio had formed and started riding, the deficit to the leader was out to 1:43 and stayed there or thereabouts for much of the rest of the course.

Over the top of the single climb of the day van Vleuten looked to be slowing but when Longo Borghini and Deignan crested the hill the gap was still 1:36 and the leader only had 5.9km left to race.

The rest of the 19 starters were spread out across the course, some solo but many riding together to try and make the short but hard stage a bit easier.

With 2km to go van Vleuten's advantage was out to nearly two minutes and she allowed herself to start celebrating.

Deignan finished second with Longo Borghini not far behind in third, the same order they finished Stage 1 and the same order they started Stage 2.
