Daniel Martin leaves Quick-Step Floors for UAE Team Emirates

The Irish GC hope switches to a team that should be more prepared to back him than the one he leaves

Daniel Martin has been revealed as one of UAE Team Emirates' new signings, leaving Quick-step Floors who he has ridden for during the last two seasons.

The team has also got the signature of Rory Sutherland, with the Australian moving over from Movistar.

UAE Team Emirates' previous leader for stage races, Louis Meinjtes, has already signed for Dimension Data although he will be racing the imminent Vuelta a Espana in UAE colours before his season ends.

The departure of Meintjes opens up leadership possibilities for Martin, with the latter finishing the 2017 Tour de France in sixth: two places and nearly four minutes ahead of his predecessor at the team.

Martin's tilt at Tour glory was marred by bad luck, in particular when he was taken down by Richie Porte (BMC Racing) who came off worse in the crash and was forced out of the race.

What's more, Quick-Step Floors went to the race with two leaders and at times appeared to push their resources in the wrong direction.

On the day Marcel Kittel, at the time in the Green Jersey, was forced out of the race, Martin found himself with limited support and on the wrong side of a split that cost him time on the GC.

We'll have to wait and see how UAE Team Emirates approach races next season but it should be a safe bet to think Martin's contractual requests will have included full team support at the Tour de France and its warm-up races.
