Van Vleuten beats compatriot van der Breggen to world time trial victory

Annemiek van Vleuten took her maiden individual World Time Trial Championship victory beating compatriot Anna van der Breggen by 12 seconds over the 21.1km course.

Van Vlueten won in a time of 28 minutes and 50 seconds, comfortably beating van der Breggen and also beating Katrin Garfoot into the bronze medal place.

Van der Breggen set the early benchmark with a time of 29:02:51, which saw her sitting on the hot seat for most of the day.

This time was then beaten by van Vleuten, who set a blistering time around the course in Bergen, Norway.

Fellow Dutchwoman Ellen Van Dijk underperformed, despite a stellar team time trial on Sunday, only managing fifth behind Chloe Dygert of the United States.

Hannah Barnes was the best placed British rider on the day, finishing in ninth, 1 minute 23 back from van Vleuten.

Van Vleuten's latest win comes in a run of form that also saw the 34-year-old take the Boels Rental Ladies Tour and La Course by Le Tour de France.
