Esteban Chaves to miss Tour of Lombardy with fractured shoulder blade

Orica-Scott rider Esteban Chaves will miss the defence of his Tour of Lombardy title after crashing and fracturing his shoulder blade at the Giro dell'Emilia last Saturday.

The young Colombian will now be unable to defend his Tour of Lombardy title this weekend, with his season coming to an abrupt end.

Chaves crashed trying to shutdown the racing winning move of Giovanni Visconti (Bahrain-Merida). Chaves was also kept in hospital to be observed for a potential concussion experienced in the fall.

Speaking to Orica-Scott, Chaves told of his disappointment at the season ending as it did.

'This is not how I wanted to finish my 2017 season, especially without the opportunity to return to Lombardy after such special memories last year, but this is the way it is and we now focus on the recovery and next season.'

This latest injury marks a season to forget for the 27-year-old, who has failed to repeat his Grand Tour podium success of 2016.

A succession of injuries back pegged Chaves throughout the season as well as dealing with the tragic loss of close friend and personal physio Diana Casas earlier this year.

This injury will leave the Tour of Lombardy without a second of its pre-race favourites. Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) is still yet to be back to full fitness and will miss the final monument of the year.

Valverde continues to recover from his crash at the Tour de France this year, and like Chaves, will wait until 2018 to race again.

With podiums at the Vuelta a Espana and Giro d"Italia under his belt, there is no doubt that Chaves, if he manages to remain injury-free, will be a major contender in next season's Grand Tours.
