Tom Dumoulin's season comes to an end due to illness before Il Lombardia

Tom Dumoulin will miss Saturday's Il Lombardia, being forced to withdraw due to illness therefore ending his 2017 season.

Team Sunweb confirmed via its Twitter page that the Dutchman will miss the Tour of Lombardy due to a virus and will be replaced by compatriot Laurens Ten Dam.

The team confirmed that Warren Barguil will assume leadership duties at the race with Wilco Kelderman and Sam Oomen as Team Sunweb's alternative options.

Team Sunweb physician Anko Boelens explained the illness that has seen Dumoulin end his season.

'Tom has woken up with flu and a sore throat and we have made the decision to take him out of the race. He will need a few days of rest to be able to fully recover.'

Dumoulin was tipped as one of the pre-race favourites for the final Monument of the season after a career-defining season.

May saw Dumoulin take his first Grand Tour victory at the Giro d'Italia before taking the World Championship Time Time in impressive fashion last month in Bergen, Norway.
