Peter Sagan will return to the Tour Down Under in 2018 to kickstart his third season as World Champion

Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) will begin his third consecutive year in the rainbow stripes of World Champion at the Tour Down Under.

The Slovakian confirmed that he would kickstart his 2018 season at the Australian WorldTour race for the second season running with local newspaper, the Adelaide Advertiser.

Speaking to the Advertiser, Sagan commented on how the combination of good weather and testing routes helped make his decision.

'I’m excited to be starting the 2018 season with the rainbow stripes across my back again in Australia at the Santos Tour Down Under,' Sagan said.

'It is the perfect start to the UCI WorldTour season each year, it has it all — a challenging and tough course, warm weather and the passionate fans that cheer for us day in day out no matter what.’

The Tour Down Under will no doubt be used to refine form after the off-season and begin the 27-year-old's charge towards competing in the first three Monuments of the year, Milan-San Remo, Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix.

Before taking on these major one-day races, Sagan is expected to turn his attention to the Spring Semi-Classics at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne.
