Fabio Aru joins UAE Team Emirates from Astana on a three-year deal

Fabio Aru has signed a three-year deal with UAE Team Emirates, ending his six-year stay at Kazakh WorldTour side Astana.

The Italian National Champion has signed a deal that will take him through to the end of the 2020 season.

Aru will be looking to challenge for Grand Tour titles next season with his new team after a year of mixed success.

Injury prevented Aru from taking the start line of this year's Giro d'Italia, which began on his native Sardinia.

However, on return from injury, the Italian managed to become Road Race National Champion before wearing the yellow jersey on two stages of the Tour de France as well as taking Stage 5 into La Planche des Belles Filles.

Aru will join fellow new signing Dan Martin as the Emirati team's most potent threats in the major Grand Tours after their respective fifth and sixth places at this year's Tour.

On announcing the signing of Aru, team manager Carlo Saronni underlined his ability to excite as equally important as his ability to win.

'We welcome a champion like Fabio Aru; his skills perfectly match the ambitions of the team,' said Saronni.

'Besides highlighting Aru’s enormous potential, I’d like to point out that Aru is a rider who can stir up excitement among the fans; he is well-loved because of his generosity on a bike.'
