Complete guide to the 2019 Tour Down under including full route

The Tour Down Under has now cemented itself as the traditional curtain raiser of the season, and it returns for its 21st edition overall and 12th as the WorldTour opener.

As usual, the men's and women's stage races centre around the southern Australian city of Adelaide, with the men's race from starting on Tuesday 15th and ending on Sunday 20th.

Sticking to tradition, the men's race will also focus on its queen stage summit finish atop Willunga Hill, albeit with this potentially decisive stage being moved to the final day, setting up a mouthwatering finale on this now famous climb.

The women's race took place last week with Amanda Spratt taking her third consecutive title after another impressive victory atop Melenger Hill on Stage 2. She beat Mitchelton-Scott teammate Lucy Kennedy by 49 seconds with Rachel Neylan (Uni-SA-Australia) rounding off an all-Australian podium.

Mitchelton-Scott's Daryl Impey returns as defending champion although eyes will be on home favourite Richie Porte, who will make his debut with Trek-Segafredo following a summer switch from the now-defunct BMC Racing.

There could also be an interesting contest in the sprints with Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe), Elia Viviani (Deceuninck-Quick Step) and Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal) all in attendance.
