Watch: Mathieu Van Der Poel discusses his new Canyon Inflite cyclocross bike

European Champion switched bikes on New Year's Day, and here he is giving the lowdown

Current European and former World Cyclocross Champion Mathieu Van Der Poel's new sponsorship deal kicked in on 1st January and in this video from Shimano he talks about his new Canyon Inflite CF SLX with Dura-Ace Di2.

As with road cycling, teams and sponsorships officially change on New Year's Day, but for cyclocross that means a change mid-season, so a rider can race just days apart on a completely different rig.

Van Der Poel, speaking in his native Dutch, runs through the bike's specification and draws particular attention to the Inflite's unique top tube shape.

The Dutchman debuted the bike on New Year's Day taking it to victory in the Sven Nys classic beating rival, World Champion Wout van Aert.

'It looks a little strange, as you can see,' he says, undicating the kinked tubing. 'But it really is a great 'cross bike. Of course, it took some getting used to.'

The 22-year-old is a big fan of Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 electronic shifting and the improve hydraulic brake hoods.

Van Der Poel will take the start line of the World Championships at home in the Netherlands in February as one of the favourites alongside current champion van Aert.

The pair are a step above the field but the result won't be a foregone conclusion.
