The Maserati Tour de Yorkshire Ride sportive has released a new jersey paying homage to Beryl Burton

The Maserati Tour de Yorkshire Ride has released a new jersey for the 2018 edition of the sportive which has been designed to honour Beryl Burton. The rider, who came from Leeds where this year's sportive will start, was one of Britain's best ever racing cyclists.

The jersey is available for pre-order now and what's more £1 from every one sold will be donated to Maggie's the cancer support charity, which will open the doors to a centre in Leeds in 2018.

Burton, born in 1937, dominated British domestic cycle racing throughout the 1960s and 70s. She was twice World Champion on the road - in 1960 and 1967, and that first title came five years before Tom Simpson became the first male British rider to win the rainbow jersey.

Outriding all competitors - men and women - was a trademark of Burton's career, and she set a women's record for the 12-hour time-trial which exceeded the men's best time for two years.

Denise Burton-Cole, daughter of Beryl and a champion in her own right, was involved in the design of the new jersey.

'My mother would be amazed and pleased by the growth of cycling in Yorkshire,' Burton-Cole said.

'Back when my mother was most active in cycling there were far fewer women riding and competing.

'She would have been delighted to see more women out there now, especially getting on their bikes and taking part in this very special event.'

Entries are now open for the 2018 Maserati Tour de Yorkshire Ride sportive, with the choice of three routes all starting and finishing in Leeds.

The sportive runs on the morning of the final stage of the Tour de Yorkshire, giving amateurs the chance to watch the race upon completion of the sportive.
