Organiser takes decision to cancel sportive with expected winds of 80mph set to hit West Sussex this Sunday

The inaugural Velo South sportive, due to take place this Sunday, has been cancelled by its organiser due to the threat of adverse weather conditions following Storm Bronagh.

In a release sent on Thursday evening, organisers contacted participants stating that due to 'the continued worsening of this weekend’s weather forecast, we have taken the difficult decision to cancel Vélo South.

'To confirm, Vélo South will not be taking place this Sunday September 23.'

It then continued by stating that the Met Office had issued a yellow weather warning for 'gale force' winds during the time of the event as storms look set to cause havoc across the UK this weekend.

It also stated that several other weather platforms had confirmed the outlook with expected constant wind speeds of 38mph and gusts as high as 53mph.

Storm Bronagh is just the second named storm of the year and has already hit large parts of the UK causing flooding and travel disruptions.

By Sunday, the storm is expected to head south and provide similar disruption in Surrey, East Sussex and West Sussex, host county of the Velo South event.

The organiser cited several dangerous incidents that could be possible on Sunday including gusts blowing cyclists over or causing collisions, increased pressure on medical staff and extended exposure to adverse conditions for stewards and volunteers.

This pushed them to the decision to cancel with the organiser also stating that, 'All the advice tells us that with less than 60 hours to go until the event starts, the forecast is unlikely to change significantly and so we have opted to make the decision to cancel the event now in order to prevent cyclists travelling to West Sussex and incurring further costs, and to start the process of informing the vast number of people affected by this decision.'

All riders are entitled to full refunds for the event for both their entry fees and car-parking, with this taking up to ten working days to process. Alternatively, you can transfer your place to the 2019 Velo Birmingham or donate your entrance money to a choice of four charities.

The organiser then ended the release with a final apology and thank you for the support the event had received from budding participants and stakeholders.

'The entire Vélo South team are devastated that the event will not take place on Sunday and we know this is extremely disappointing news for all of our cyclists, stakeholders and supporters but we hope you understand that the good old British weather has, in reality, left us with no alternatives.

'We thank you for the amazing support you have given to Vélo South over recent months and we very much hope we will see you all on the start line next year!'
