Arnaud Demare and Dylan Groenewegen among those kicked out of race

A group of race favourites have been disqualified mid-race from the Scheldeprijs for jumping across a closing level crossing.

The group that were ejected from the race included the likes of pre-race favourites Dylan Gronewegen (LottoNL-Jumbo) and Arnaud Demare (Groupama-FDJ). Young Quick-Step Floors sprinter Alvaro Hodeg was also believed to be among those taken out of the race but it appears he was not identified correctly.

A tweet from Eurosport commentator Rob Hatch showed the group of riders being stopped by the race jurors and being informed of the disqualification. As the tweet alludes, some were visibly angry with this decision made.

The incident took place within the final 100km of the race as the peloton began to split due to the wind. Before the event, echelons had already formed with multiple pelotons taking shape across the exposed roads.

The disqualification of the likes of Groenewegen and Demare will play into the hands of race favourite Marcel Kittel (Katusha-Alpecin). The ejection of his two main rivals has seen the level of competition for the expected bunch finish drop dramatically.

The race continued with a reduced bunch that consisted of no more than 100 riders with Kittel's Katusha doing most of the pace setting.
