Cyclist caught up with Spartacus to discuss why the Giro is so special

The 101st Giro d'Italia starts this Friday making history in the Israeli city of Jerusalem. The race will begin with a short 9.7km individual time trial around the twisting and turning city streets with the day's winner taking the first pink jersey of the race.

This weekend Cyclist caught up with a man who knows a thing or two about winning the opening stage of a Grand Tour, Fabian Cancellara.

'Spartacus' won a total of six opening Grand Tour time trials, riding himself to the leader's yellow jersey of the Tour de France and red jersey of the Vuelta a Espana on multiple occasions. At points in his career, he was simply unstoppable against the clock.

However, the pink leader's jersey of the Giro d'Italia was one of the most noticeable absences from the Swiss rider's rich palmares, a particular jarring stat for the half-Italian.

Due to his concentration on winning the Spring Classics in March and April, Cancellara only ever raced the Giro on three occasions in his career - 2007, 2009 and 2016 - withdrawing on each occasion before the finish.

Only on the final occasion in 2016 did the race start with an ITT and despite specifically targeting pink, Cancellara could only manage eighth, 14 seconds adrift of victor Tom Dumoulin

Regardless of this, Cancellara retired as one of the greatest time triallists ever, making him a pretty good judge as to who will perform this Friday and for him, there is only one man worth watching.

'For sure, if Rohan Dennis is racing a prologue, he will win, 'Cancellara said. 'I don't think anyone will be able to beat him.

'However, he is not the next Fabian Cancellara. There is only one Fabian Cancellara.'

Beyond riding against the clock, Cancellara also told us why the Giro is such a special race, what makes it so tough and the beauty of cycling in Italy.
