Dumoulin will follow Froome to France, six weeks after missing out in Italy

Team Sunweb look set to announce Tom Dumoulin as their main General Classification rider for the Tour de France. Having finished a strong second to Chris Froome (Team Sky) in his title defence at the Giro, the Dutchman will return to Grand Tour racing after a break of just six weeks.

This morning Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reported that an announcement would be made this week, but that its contents were a foregone conclusion.

Having appeared as a star-turn at the Hammer Series in Limburg at the weekend, Dumoulin headed home after dropping out during the first of three rounds in order to focus on recuperating.

Whether he’ll travel to France with designs on the overall win, or in search of stage victories, could have a deciding effect on the nature of the racing.

Of course, Froome’s participation at the Tour is still in doubt as the fallout from his adverse analytical finding for salbutamol at the 2017 Vuelta a España is yet to be resolved.

However, if he rides, he and Dumoulin will be the only GC contenders to attempt both the Giro and Tour this year.

In the Giro Dumoulin was unable to get the better of his Team Sky rival, and neither rider appeared to hold anything back during three weeks of aggressive racing.

How well both can recover will play a large part in the result of their next match-up.

With most betting markets not offering odds on Froome, Dumoulin slots in behind BMC’s Richie Porte, and the Movistar duo of Nairo Quintana and Mikel Landa, but ahead of Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) in the bookies’ affections.
