Cannondale announces new E-Road Synapse bike

2 Aug 2018

The Synapse Neo is the American brand’s first e-road bike and will be available from October

Designed in likeness to its namesake, the Cannondale Synapse Neo represents a move into the e-road bike market for Cannondale and will be available from October as a road bike or with a more versatile gravel suitable set up.

Using a Bosch Generation 3 Active Line Plus drive unit, powered by a 500Wh PowerTube battery, the Synapse provides motor assistance for up to 200 kilometres, which Cannondale is branding as a 'game changer'.

This claimed range would see it become one of the most versatile bikes on the market.

Integrated into the downtube, the PowerTube battery doesn’t compromise the Neo’s road bike aesthetic and Cannondale claims it produces virtually no drag once the motor cuts out.

Built around a C1 alloy frame, the Synapse Neo has tyre clearance for 35mm tyres making it favourable for those who value comfort when riding.

The Synapse Neo is the only Bosch-equipped electric road bike that has a double chainring crank and is also fitted with Shimano components throughout.

A cassette range of 11-34 gives suitable gears for steep climbs and Dura-Ace hydro disk brakes offer reliable braking on descents.

The Neo SE is the gravel capable model and has 47mm tyres, providing versatility for riders who want to explore more than just road riding.

Fitted with a SRAM groupset, the single 44t crank and the Neo SE’s 11-42 cassette give a gear range designed for off-road undulations.

Speaking about the announcement, Cannondale’s e-bike product manager Andreas Wildgrube said, 'We wanted to open road cycling up to everyone.

'We wanted to build a bike that would make it easy for anyone who has looked at road cycling and thought, "I wish I could do that", to get out and experience the fun for themselves.'

The Synapse Neo and Neo SE will be available in Europe from October 2018. Prices will vary from £2,999.99 for the Synapse Neo AL 3 to £4,999.99 for the top-spec Synapse Neo AL 1.
