British road race champion will be given opportunity to ride for African team until end of the season

British road race champion Connor Swift has joined Dimension Data as a stagiaire until the end of the season. Swift will be one of three riders moving to the African team on this temporary contract.

As per the UCI rules, Swift will be unable to compete at WorldTour level for Dimension Data but will be free to represent the team in any Continental-ranked races.

All WorldTour teams are allowed to employ three stagiaires from the opening of the transfer window on 1st August until the end of the calendar year.

Swift is joined by 21-year-old Italian Matteo Sobrero and 22-year-old South African Kent Main who both make the jump from the Dimension Data Continental feeder team.

Previous stagiaires for Dimension Data include Ryan Gibbons, Nicolas Dlamini and Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier, who are all currently under contract with the WorldTour team.

Swift makes the move up to Dimension Data from the British-based Madison-Genesis side, having spent the previous two seasons in their set-up.

With two wins of the Tour Series in 2017, the 22-year-old made his big break becoming British National Champion last month where he won the race solo ahead of Adam Blythe (Aqua Blue Sport) and Owain Doull (Team Sky).

Swift is expected to begin representing Dimension Data after the Tour of Britain in September. The national champion's jersey could also be given the opportunity to earn a full contract at the remaining Arctic Race of Norway, Deutschland Tour and Italian Autumn Classics before the end of the year.

This article was updated with regards to when Swift will start racing for Dimension Data. He's expected to appear at the Tour of Britain as part of Madison-Genesis
