Join Cyclist in September for a 45km, unsupported ride through Surrey's best off-road paths and toughest tarmac hills

This September, Cyclist Magazine will host its first off-road test event taking riders across 45km of Surrey's best tarmac roads, toughest hills and gnarly off-road paths.

Taking place on 8th September from the Priory School in Dorking, Surrey, the route will tackle the likes of Holmbury Hill and the Greensand Ridge before heading off onto the many fire roads and singletrack paths that connect Surrey's dense woodland.

Cyclist expects ride time to be around 2 hours 30 minutes with this varying on weather and route choice. The course will be best suited for gravel-specific and cyclocross bikes with the off-road terrain too technical for road bikes. You can also complete the ride on a mountain bike but you may find those fatter tyres cover the terrain in too light work.

Unlike your traditional sportive, the Cyclist Gravel ride will be completely self-supported with riders having to navigate their route using nothing but a GPS and GPX file which will be provided 24 hours before. There will be no feed stations or mechanical support so reliance on your own intuition will be necessary.

If the idea of going alone daunts you a little too much, worry not, as HotChillee Ride Captains and Cyclist staff members will be on-hand at the start of the day to lead groups around the course.

Once you have completed your ride and roll back into Priory School, you will be greeted with some delicious, artisan pizza and a beer for your hard work.

The ride venue is ideally situated just a 10-minute ride from Dorking West train station and just 20 minutes from the M25. For those driving,  the school also offers ample parking with enough room to build and prepare bikes before and after the ride.

With this being Cyclist's first event of this kind, we will also be grateful for post-ride feedback on what was good, what was bad and where we can approve.

Entries for the event are now full, but check back from information on other upcoming rides and Track Days

Event Information

Venue: Priory School, Dorking, Surrey, RH4 3DG

Start time: 8am arrive, 8.30am start

Finish time: 12pm finish

Route: 45km approx (50% on road, 50% off-road), GPX route to be released before the event

Note: The GPX route has been pre-ridden by Cyclist and should act as a guide. We recommend you follow the route provided but if you want to take a chance on a potential shortcut, then give it a go.

Cyclist recommends that you dress appropriately for the weather. Being September, there's a high chance of rain so expect to get wet and muddy.

The off-road paths on the GPX will remain open to ramblers, dog-walkers and horses so be considerate when riding.

The off-road sections are challenging but thoroughly enjoyable. Cyclist also suggests you bring plenty of spare tubes, a good hand pump and any other spares you consider necessary.
