Adam Blythe relishing a return to Lotto-Soudal

Even before the collapse of his current team, Adam Blythe was on his way back to the WorldTour

When time was called on ProContinental team Aqua Blue Sport before the season had even finished, many riders and team staff were left without employment for the 2019 season. Key rider Adam Blythe was one of those whose season came to a premature close, but for him the future was already being planned.

'I was already looking [for a new team]' Blythe said at a recent press event for David Millar's Chpt3 clothing line. 'I didn't have a contract for the next year so I was looking anyway, which not many people know.'

Even when news of Aqua Blue's collapse was revealed, Blythe says he 'just carried on looking as usual'.

It was when he spoke to Caleb Ewan, who will move from Mitchelton-Scott to Lotto-Soudal for 2019, that a new contract came about.

'I spoke to Caleb, who was going to Lotto, and he just said, "It'll be great to have you."

'I spoke to the team at Lotto-Soudal and that was it, done and dusted,' Blythe added.

Blythe rode for the Lotto team, under its previous names, for three seasons from the start of 2009 and is pleased to be going somewhere that still feels familiar.

'There are a lot of new faces but the management is sort of the same, so it’s nice.'

His role throughout next year will be directly related to his recruitment, to serve as Ewan's chief domestique but with scope to go for his own ambitions, too.

'That’s what I’ll be there for mainly, to look after Caleb. I’m sure I’ll get my own chance along the way, but the reason I’m there is for Caleb.'

With one team meeting behind him, a training camp before Christmas and a team bike supplied for winter training, Blythe will soon be embedded in the squad and looking ahead to next season.
