All new riders will be entitled to a free day's worth of 30 minute rides in March after paying for one day's worth of access

New users of the Transport for London Santander cycle hire during March will be treated to a free day of cycling in a bid to get more people using bikes in London.

TfL will offer two days worth of cycling for the price of one to anyone who registers through the Santander Cycles app or online during March.

Any rider that registers and then subsequently pays for 24-hour access for £2 will then be sent an email giving them another day's worth of access for any day throughout March giving riders unlimited access to any 30-minute rides across London for free.

The app – which is downloadable from iTunes and the Google Play Store – can allow you to access release codes straight from your phone, search for nearby docking stations and also check live availability to prevent you getting to a station with no bike or not space to dock.

Talking about the deal, London's walking and cycling commissioner Will Norman said he hoped the offer will help new cyclists explore new parts of London.

'Santander Cycles are such a fun and easy way to get around our city and I hope our spring two-for-one offer will encourage even more people to give cycling a go,' said Norman.

'I’d encourage people to try out some of our new routes, such as those in Southwark, Camden and Newham. We are continuing to spend record amounts on cycling infrastructure to make our streets safer and more appealing for all Londoners to cycle on.'

Head of cycle hire at TfL Dave Eddington hopes that schemes such as the 'spring two-for-one' will help towards the wider goal of doubling the number of cyclists in London by 2024 also commenting that 'this new offer for spring will help to encourage even more Londoners and visitors to take to two wheels, whether they’re exploring London or commuting to work.'

Record-breaking warm weather in February helped contribute to the schemes best-ever February with just under 700,000 hires across the month. The mild weather also saw the best day for hires in February last Thursday with 30,000 hires in just one day.

January was also record-breaking with 685,759 hires throughout the month.
