The BBC has announced an hour-long documentary on Tour de France champion Geraint Thomas's title defence preparations will be shown later this year.

BBC Two and BBC Cymru Wales confirmed the documentary will be called 'Geraint Thomas: Easy Rider' and will look partly at his journey to Tour de France victory, upbringing in Cardiff while also following Thomas as he prepares to defend his Tour title this July.

The documentary will follow Thomas to Tenerife as he undertakes altitude camps while also joining him and Team Sky - soon to be Team Ineos - at the Tour de Romandie and Tour de Suisse in his final preparations ahead of July.

Part of the documentary will also be self-shot by the Welshman to provide an 'access-all-areas' feel while there will also be interviews with family members as it re-tells his journey from the Maindy Velodrome in Cardiff to the Champs-Elysees in Paris.

In a BBC statement, Thomas said he hoped viewers would enjoy this insight into his preparation ahead of the world's biggest cycling race.

'Last year was an absolutely phenomenal year for me. The support I received from the fans was just incredible. As this season gets underway I’m looking forward to sharing more of my story, and taking the audience with me as I prepare for the races ahead,' said Thomas.

This is the latest BBC Cymru Wales documentary that looks to give insight into the world of elite sport after the same team of film makers followed British and Irish Lions and Wales rugby union captain Sam Warburton during his struggles with persistent injuries and near-success.

'Sam Warburton: Full Contact' was released earlier this year and BBC Cymru Wales's Nick Andrew hopes Thomas's documentary will be met with the same praise.

'Geraint Thomas: Easy Rider will be a stunning portrait of an athlete at the top of his game. People know Geraint the humble, warm and witty man, but put him on a bike and he’s the ultimate warrior and a national treasure. This film will give our audiences extraordinary and privileged access to his preparation and dedication as he sets out to defend his Tour de France title,' said Andrew.

'I can’t wait to see what the creative team at Nimble Productions do with this film. If it’s anything like their last epic Sam Warburton: Full Contact we’re in for a treat, and we can expect an amazing insight into one of the greatest sportsmen on the planet.'

The documentary will air on BBC Two and BBC Cymru Wales towards the end of the year although a specific month is yet to be announced.

Thomas will head back to France this July in defence of his yellow jersey although may see himself playing second fiddle within his own team.

Chris Froome will also be racing the Tour and has already made his intentions to aim for a record-equalling fifth yellow jersey clear.
