The cobbled roads of Roubaix in northern France are tortuous when dry, treacherous when wet. Yet they are also so steeped in history that they remain a pilgrimage that every cyclist should make.

So that's exactly what we've done, braving conditions that would make even pros flinch to take on some of the most iconic cobbled secteurs that make Paris-Roubaix such a unique and challenging race every spring.

And while we're on the subject of famous names from cycling's past, this issue sees us paying homage to perhaps the most famous name of all by taking on the Eddy Merckx Classic sportive in Austria, while we also go behind the scenes with Greg Van Avermaet and his CCC Team, and look at the unique challenge that is six-day racing.

Also in Cyclist June 2019

• Having swapped the Lycra of the pro peloton for the pinstripes of the city, double Monument winner Simon Gerrans has no plans to slow down in retirement

• Shouldering the border between France and Italy, steeped in history and soaring to 2,744m, it's odd that the Col Agnel isn't more celebrated

• No country in the world has the heritage and passion for cycling that Italy does. Yet this year's Giro d'Italia will begin in May without an Italian WorldTour team in the line-up. Cyclist looks at the reasons for the Italian slump, and ask if it can ever return to past glories

• We head Down Under for a first-hand taste of Bastion Cycling's unique approach to bespoke bikebuilding, test out new bikes from Litespeed, Basso and Boardman, and remember Henri Desgrange, the man who make the Tour de France the toughest sporting event in the world

It's all in Cyclist issue 87, on sale now.
