Place on the Storey Racing team could be up for grabs along with the chance to join Donnons Des Elles au Vélo J-1 at the Tour de France

Multiple National Track Champion and Paralympic gold medalist Dame Sarah Storey is to launch a cycling academy for female riders. Currently the team captain of the eponymous Storey Racing, Dame Sarah intends the academy to provide a route for young amateur cyclists who want to break through to the professional level.

Initially offering five places, recruitment will be by open invitation meaning anyone can apply. Find out more here: skoda.co.uk/cycling-academy

Open until 24th May, riders will initially be asked to log their training rides via a dedicated Strava club. Stand-out performers will then be invited to a trial at the Lee Valley Velo Park.

The venue where Storey claimed several of her Olympic golds, riders who further impress with their skills on the test track and metrics in the performance centre could win one of five spots on the Skoda DSI Cycling Academy.

These five riders will then benefit from the support of the team itself, along with Storey’s world-class mentorship.

Towards a women’s Tour de France

Highlighting the current lack of any Grand Tours for women athletes, the squad of five will also have the opportunity to attend Donnons Des Elles au Vélo J-1.

Now heading towards its fifth year, this event sees a team of female cyclists complete the entire Tour de France route one day ahead of the men, aiming to prove the viability of a full and equivalent race for women.

With a calendar also including dates at L’Etape du Tour and RideLondon, the end of the season could see one rider promoted to the Storey Racing development team if they make the grade.

Currently a 12 person team for 2019, its riders range from Youth A to Senior, along with three para-cyclists. Having recently contested the Tour de Yorkshire, six of the team's riders will also be in action throughout the Ovo Energy Women's Tour.

If you fancy joining them next year, best get your application in soon.

A similar campaign by fellow women's team Canyon-Sram using the Zwift platform has been running for several years, most recently garnering over 4,900 participants.
